SUSIE BIDGOOD

Ceramicist

Susie is a ceramic artist with over 15 years’ experience, working from her studio in South Oxfordshire. Guided by a deep passion for clay, she is drawn to its endless possibilities as a material for artistic expression.

Each piece begins with a broad idea and sometimes a rough sketch. Susie carefully selects the clay that best suits her vision, from silky, unpredictable porcelain to robust, heavily grogged clays rich in texture and movement. She forms her work using throwing, coiling, or slab-building techniques, allowing the process itself to inspire the final shape.

Surfaces are then developed through layering, texturing, altering, reshaping, and the considered use of colour to enhance detail and character. Ideas may emerge instantly or evolve slowly over days, but continual exploration is central to her practice. Some pieces are discarded along the way, unseen, as part of a process that allows new ideas to surface and grow.

Inspiration comes from a wide range of sources. Currently, Susie is exploring techniques used by painters, experimenting with ways to translate these approaches onto ceramic surfaces. Her work spans precise geometric imagery through to highly abstract, richly textured designs, each piece reflecting an ongoing dialogue between material and process.
